VITA – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance preparing their own tax returns, including:
- Low to Moderate Income Families
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
Current year and prior year tax return preparation is available at all sites

Where do I go to get my taxes done?
We are open on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. We are located at The Ada Jenkins Center 212 Gamble St. Davidson, NC 28036.
Additional Sites:
- North Mecklenburg Regional Library – appointments and walk-ins available Saturdays from 10am – 3pm
To secure your spot please make an appointment through one of the links below:
There will be Limited Walk-in availability at all sites through April 12th, 2025, will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis.
All taxpayers should bring:
- Required – Photo ID for taxpayer(s) – driver’s license, State ID card or passport
- Required – Social Security Card (or Form SSA-1099 – social security statement) for taxpayer(s) and dependents
- Last years’ tax return
- Voided blank check (or access to online banking information) for direct deposit of any tax refund
Please bring any applicable 2024 tax documents:
- Income documents – W-2, SSA-1099 (social security statement), 1099-R, 1099-G,1099-NEC, 1099-Misc, 1099-K, 1099-C, etc.
- 1098-T for your college student
- 1095-A (Marketplace medical insurance)
- Statement from childcare provider, including provider’s SSN or EIN
- Any other tax document that you believe is important to file your tax return
If you anticipate itemizing your deductions, then please bring:
- Medical expense documentation
- Form 1098 (mortgage interest)
- State and local tax, including property tax, documentation
- Charitable giving documentation- goods and case
If you are self-employed, please bring all income and expenses records, and details of miles driven for business. For Uber/Lyft/DoorDash, etc. drivers, please bring your statement of account from the company.
Please note: Some situations are outside the program parameters, which will prevent us from preparing your return, including:
- Rental income or sale of investment property.
- If you moved from another state to North Carolina or South Carolina during 2024, we may not be able to complete the other state’s tax return.
- If you sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of a digital asset (e.g. bitcoin), we are unable to prepare the return.
- If you are eligible for Electric Vehicle or Solar Tax Credits, we are unable to prepare your return
- If you are in bankruptcy, we are unable to prepare the return.
Please bring these documents to your appointment :
- Proof of identification (photo ID)
- Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents
- An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
- Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
- Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
- Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
- Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
- Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
- A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
- Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
- Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
- Forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements
- Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable
Note: For married-filing-joint tax returns, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
