Tania and her girls have a home for the holidays!

Tani'a

Tania and her girls had been living in a hotel when, because one daughter needed extensive surgery, their funds ran out. Tania came to the Ada Jenkins Center seeking help. Her case manager found them a transitional housing opening, where they were able to stay while waiting for permanent housing. Her case manager also has been helping during the process to facilitate a smooth transition.

“This is just one example of the families we’ve heard from in the past six months,” says Ginny McManus, Director of Economic Mobility at the Ada Jenkins Center. “At any given time, we are providing 25 families with intensive case management, which includes housing search and stabilization, food, budgeting, and connections to community resources and employment. We’re helping another 45 families experiencing homelessness, and receiving 30 calls per week for assistance with rent and utilities. We’re doing everything we can to help them get back on their feet.”

Service Updates

Out of an abundance of caution, we have limited access to our building and are requiring face masks in accordance with local guidelines — but rest assured: we are fully operational and making positive things happen for our client families.

Since our program year started on July 1,

  • ___ people called or emailed us, seeking financial assistance or referrals to partner agencies
  • ___ people have obtained groceries through the Loaves and Fishes food pantry
  • ___ families received COVID-related emergency financial assistance totaling more than $______
  • ____ new client families have entered our Economic Mobility program, receiving tenancy education, connections with area housing, budget assistance, employment and training opportunities, and more
  • 60 homeless people have been connected with Mecklenburg County services
  • 52 students have been enrolled in our LEARN Works afterschool academic program for the current school year, and received backpacks full of donated school supplies
  • ____ volunteers have helped us deep-clean the food pantry and classrooms, and repainted the Center for the first time in years.

There’s still more to do, as the eviction moratorium and COVID-19 unemployment benefits have expired — and we worry about what that might mean for the families we serve. We will continue to provide economic assistance as long as we have the funds to do so.  There are several ways to inquire about economic assistance: via email; via text or voicemail at 704-703-5056; or via our website.
